THE ENVIRONMENT THE FSC CHOICE OUR CHOICES

It's not an oxymoron. You can protect and preserve the environment when you consume paper responsibly. Our mills think very carefully about how they source their fiber, source their energy and handle their waste when manufacturing the paper. Let our sales people help you determine which papers best reflect your environmental priorities and concerns.

Some ways in which paper manufacturing helps to minimize our environmental impact include:

Encouraging Sustainable Forestry and Preserving Biodiversity.

If you're concerned about how the practice of forestry affects our ecosphere, then look for third party certification to let you know that the mill sources fiber responsibly. These organizations verify that the practices used to plant and harvest trees meet standards to minimize environmental impact.

FSC:   Forest Stewardship Council Certified

SFI:     Sustainable Forestry Initiative Certified

PEFC:  Programme for the endorsement of
          Forest Certification

Even further, the use of recycled fiber over virgin fiber minimizes additional tree harvest as well as limits unnecessary additions to our landfills by reusing post consumer and post industrial waste. If a brand is made with at least 30% Post Consumer Waste, then it may qualify as Green Seal Certified.

Reducing Carbon Emissions

Mills work to utilize alternative sources of energy in order to minimize emissions, reduce consumption and focus on renewable sources. This can either be in the form of solar power, wind power, or even biogas. As a result, they may qualify for the following distinctions:

CN:    Carbon Neutral

Green e Certifed:
         Made with certified renewable energy

Purifying Waste
While water waste requirements mean that mills often discharge purified water that is cleaner than they received it, you can further ensure purification by choosing papers made:

ECF:   Elemental Chlorine Free (Only gas utilized)

PCF:   Process Chlorine Free (No Chlorine used at all)

Remember, your choices can not only make a statement about your commitment to the environment but can help influence an industry. The more you demand environmentally responsible papers, the more production will shift towards these products.
